After an hour of scrubbing windows, or to be honest, hoping to see Declan—washed in moonlight, in the fields below—my stomach reminded me that it was dinnertime.

I padded to the fridge, pulled it open, and tilted my head to the side. Lunch meat, a block of cheese, half of a tomato, and one Diet Coke left in a ring that had held six. That was it. My gaze lifted to the small liquor cabinet above the freezer, which was empty. I inhaled through my nose, exhaled, and refocused on my pathetically empty fridge.

The thought of making chili for a man who loved it seemed more daunting than the lack of booze in the house. Thinking of everything I’d need to make the dinner, I decided now was as good a time as any for a quick grocery run.

The night was dark and cool as I slipped into my car, clicking on my headlights before heading down the dirt road. Lights twinkled through the trees as I came up on the Y.

Declan’s garage was fully lit with two cars in the parking lot and all three bays open, classic rock blaring from inside. I slowed, my nose nearly pressed to my side window as I passed. I recognized his combat boots peeking out from under a rusty Oldsmobile.

A man sat outside the garage under a light, reading the newspaper and puffing on a cigar. I looked at my dash clock—8:44 p.m.

Declan didn’t have a date or a poker night with the boys to get to. No, he had appointments to take care of. He had to work. And for the first time, I wondered if money was an issue for him.

Coming to a complete stop, I considered pulling in and asking if he’d like me to pick up dinner for him while I was in town.

Just then, Kai stepped out of the office with a stack of empty Coke cans in her arms. She zeroed in on my vehicle, then scowled. Eyeing me with disdain, Cool Kid Cher crossed the grass to the recycle bin.

I forced a crooked smile, waved, and accelerated on by, watching in the rearview mirror as she glared at me until I faded out of sight.
